Joey Jones, the iconic left-back who represented Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham, has passed away at the age of 70.
Capped 72 times for Wales, Jones enjoyed a distinguished playing career that included three separate spells at Wrexham, alongside stints at Liverpool, Chelsea, and Huddersfield Town.
His time at Liverpool was particularly memorable. During a remarkable three-year period at Anfield, he won a First Division title, two European Cups, a UEFA Cup, and a European Super Cup.
He made history in 1977 by becoming the first Welshman to lift the European Cup after Liverpool’s victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in Rome.
In tribute, fans famously created a 24-foot banner proclaiming: “Joey ate the frogs legs, made the Swiss roll, now he’s munching Gladbach.”
Jones also won the Welsh Cup during his first spell with Wrexham and later helped Chelsea secure the Second Division title in the 1983–84 season.
Upon rejoining Wrexham in 1978, he became the club’s record signing—a title he held until 2022, when Ollie Palmer joined the club.
Ranked joint-15th alongside Mark Hughes in the list of Wales’ most capped male players, the Llandudno-born defender retired from professional football in 1992 at the age of 37.
Wrexham AFC paid tribute, stating: “Wrexham AFC are devastated to learn of the passing of club legend Joey Jones, who sadly died in the early hours of this morning aged 70 after a battle with illness.”
To honour his legacy, the club announced plans to erect a statue of Jones in the public plaza outside the Kop Stand at the Stok Cae Ras.
