Former England rugby player Tom Voyce is feared to have died after attempting to drive across a river in Northumberland during Storm Darragh.
Northumbria Police confirmed that the 43-year-old, who had been spending an evening with friends, failed to return home afterward.
Authorities believe Voyce attempted to drive across Abberwick Ford, near Alnwick, when his car was swept away by the current.
The vehicle was later recovered, but officers did not find Voyce. It is believed that he was carried away by the river while trying to escape and has tragically died.
The heavy rainfall from Storm Darragh contributed to the rising water levels of the River Aln over the weekend.
Chief Superintendent Helena Barron of Northumbria Police expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This is an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are with Tom’s loved ones at this difficult time.”
The search for Voyce has involved specialist officers from the Marine Section, the National Police Air Service, drones, and dog handlers.
Voyce earned nine caps for England during his rugby career and played for Wasps from 2003 to 2009, where he helped the team secure European and domestic titles.

Storm Darragh has already claimed two lives.
The storm, which brought wind gusts of up to 93mph, also caused widespread disruption, with train cancellations and tens of thousands of people left without power.
