Former Liverpool Women’s Manager Matt Beard Died by Hanging, Coroner’s Court Told.

Former Liverpool FC Women manager Matt Beard died by hanging, a coroner’s court hearing in North Wales has heard.

At a hearing on Monday in Ruthin, coroner John Gittins stated that paramedics had been called to Beard’s home in Deeside, Flintshire, on September 20.

He was transported to a hospital in Chester, where he was later pronounced dead at 21:15 BST.

The inquest into his death has been adjourned, with a full hearing scheduled for a later date.

Beard, who was 47, made a significant impact on women’s football, most notably leading Liverpool Women to consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) titles in 2013 and 2014.

He returned to manage the club in 2021 but was relieved of his duties in February 2025.

His most recent role was at Burnley, where he resigned in June, just two months after his appointment.

News of his passing has prompted a widespread outpouring of grief and tributes from across the football community.

A minute’s silence was observed before all WSL and WSL2 matches on September 21, in memory of Beard. Liverpool’s fixture against Aston Villa was postponed as a mark of respect.

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner hailed Beard as an “icon,” while former England star Fara Williams described him as “one of a kind with the purest of souls.”

A fundraiser launched by sports journalist Jacqui Oatley to support Beard’s family has already raised over £50,000.
