Kenya has officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi, becoming the first African city to stage the event.
The bid, announced by Athletics Kenya and backed by Kenyan government, seeks to showcase the country’s long-standing athletics tradition and its experience hosting major international competitions.
Nairobi stands a strong contender against London, Rome and Munich. The World Athletics is expected to evaluate infrastructure, organizational capacity and government support.
Previously Kenya hosted several major World Athletics including the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the 2010 African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, the 2017 World Under- 18 Championships in Nairobi and 2021 World Athletics Undr-20 Championships in Nairobi.
In addition it recently hosted the Kip Keino Classic at Nyayo Stadium and the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Championships that demonstrated its ability to stage world –class competitions.
The Kenyan government has fully pledged its support, including the renovations of the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, with canopy installation and tartan track upgrades and good comprehensive accommodations, transport, medical facilities and security to meet international standards.
The 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships are expected to be announced by World Athletics after the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, next month.
