Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has urged authorities to strictly enforce laws protecting the Kenyan flag, saying its misuse dishonours the sacrifices made during the country’s struggle for independence.
In a statement posted on her X account, Passaris called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest individuals found desecrating or misusing the national flag.
She cited Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya), which prohibits the improper use, insult, or desecration of the flag and outlines penalties for violations.
“Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya) prohibits the improper use, insult, or desecration of the Kenyan flag, with penalties for offenders,” she wrote, emphasizing the importance of upholding national symbols.
Her comments follow public outrage sparked by viral videos showing individuals—reportedly of Somali nationality—disrespecting the Kenyan flag during a football match in Nairobi.
Passaris condemned what she described as a growing trend of disregard for the national symbol.
“It is unfortunate to see people abuse our Kenyan flag,” she stated, reminding the public that the flag is not just a piece of cloth but a powerful emblem of Kenya’s identity, unity, and hard-won freedom.
