Women entrepreneurs in the informal sectors of national and county urban centers were called a ”national jewel” which the political leaders and administrators must continually add value to them to make it more productive and refundable to the mother society.
Such declaration was made during the launch of the “Elevate Her” program in Kakuma, Turkana County, a landmark project that leverages entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, and sustainable livelihood among the women and girls in the region.
The women empowerment project by the UNHCR, HACO Industries, and the Nemlon Training Institute is a joint venture that is aimed at materializing empowerment goals in the most marginalized areas of Kenya.
It was also added by the organizers that the drive will endeavor to accomplish its goals by providing women with business and vocational skills that they can use to launch and expand small enterprises, thus enhancing the viability of the communities that have been hit hard by displacement and poverty.
”Our main ambition is to equip women with the skill set and information that will render them financially independent and capable of making a positive impact in their families and communities,” said a UNHCR representative.
The program was highly appreciated by the local leaders, who said that it would, in addition to economically empowering women, help in the promotion of gender equality, social inclusion, and community resilience in Turkana County.
Through the ‘Elevate Her’ initiative, the targeted women and girls will have the support of the program coordinators in providing them with training, mentoring, and business development avenues in Kakuma and the neighboring areas.
