The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has successfully recovered KES 12,458,990 fraudulently acquired from the Taita Taveta County Government by Geoffrey Kimonge, a former political advisor to ex-Governor John Mruttu. The recovery follows a court ruling that found Kimonge guilty of illegally obtaining the funds through fraudulent imprest claims.

According to the ruling by Voi Chief Magistrate Mildred Obura, Kimonge acquired the money by falsely applying for imprest under the pretext of covering allowances for County Assembly Ward members and staff of the Taita Taveta County Government. The court determined that the funds were misappropriated and ordered Kimonge to repay the full amount, along with interest at commercial rates from the date of acquisition until full settlement.

The successful recovery of the stolen funds highlights the EACC’s commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that public resources are used for their intended purposes. The commission, through legal interventions, has been intensifying efforts to trace and recover public funds lost through fraudulent activities in both county and national governments.

In a statement, the EACC emphasized that public officials who misuse taxpayer money will be held accountable.

"This recovery serves as a strong warning to public officials who engage in corruption. We will continue to pursue stolen public funds and ensure those responsible face the full force of the law," the statement read.

The case has sparked discussions on the need for stronger financial oversight mechanisms within county governments to prevent misuse of public funds. Analysts argue that such fraudulent activities undermine service delivery and development projects meant to benefit local communities.

With the court ruling in place, Kimonge is now required to reimburse the government the full amount, plus interest. The ruling adds to a growing list of successful anti-corruption efforts by the EACC, signaling a crackdown on individuals who exploit public office for personal gain.
