Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has ordered the suspension of 40 hospitals from the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme after they were found to be involved in fraudulent activities.

Addressing journalists on Friday, Duale said the facilities will remain suspended until they fully comply with SHA regulations. Their names, he added, will be published in the Kenya Gazette once investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are complete.

“The Social Health Authority has suspended these health facilities after uncovering corruption and theft of public resources,” he said.

The CS noted that the affected hospitals will not receive any SHA benefits during the investigation period. “We will also surcharge them to recover any money already paid out based on fraudulent claims,” he added.

According to the ministry, the scams included multiple billing of patients and falsely categorising outpatients as inpatients to inflate costs.

In addition to the hospitals, eight doctors from Nairobi, Bungoma, and Kilifi counties have also been suspended for their direct involvement in the schemes.
