Departing flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are experiencing delays due to an ongoing labour dispute between the Kenya Aviation Workers Union and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has said.

In a statement issued on Monday, KAA said contingency measures had been activated to minimise disruption, but warned that some departing flights may still be affected as negotiations continue between the two parties.

Passengers travelling through the country’s main aviation hub have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible changes.

"Contingency plans have been activated. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for scheduled updates. Kenya Airports Authority retaliates its commitment to safety and operational excellence at all our airports." KAA said in a statement.

“KAA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety and operational efficiency across all airports under its management, noting that efforts are ongoing to resolve the dispute while ensuring travellers’ welfare.”

The statement was signed by acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Mohamud Gedi.

The labour dispute comes amid rising tensions in the aviation sector, with workers pushing for improved working conditions and clarity on regulatory matters. Industry observers say prolonged disruptions at JKIA — East Africa’s busiest airport — could affect regional travel and cargo movement if a solution is not reached soon.
