The Democratic Party of Kenya has officially reinstated former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi as its Party Leader, marking a significant turn in the party’s political direction.

The Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) announced the decision following a unanimous resolution to restore Muturi to the helm, affirming their full confidence in his leadership.

While the reinstatement is pending formal ratification by the National Delegates Convention, the move has been welcomed as a bold step toward revitalizing the party.

“A new chapter begins for the Democratic Party,” said Muturi. “This decision is not just a personal honour, it is a call to action as we work together to rebuild, re-energize, and reposition our party for the future.”

The decision comes months after a political fallout between Muturi and President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

In March, the Democratic Party severed ties with the ruling coalition, following Muturi’s public criticism of government actions—including condemning enforced disappearances allegedly carried out by state agents, one of whom was reportedly his own son.

Shortly after the rift, Muturi was dismissed from the Cabinet, where he had been serving as Attorney General. President Ruto went on to nominate former Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku as his replacement.

Muturi’s reinstatement signals a reawakening of the Democratic Party’s independence and ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
