The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced a robust crackdown on illegal betting platforms across the country, as part of a wider effort to protect citizens from exploitation and encourage responsible gaming.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the DCI revealed it is collaborating with the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) to tighten regulatory oversight and ensure that all gaming operators adhere strictly to the law.

“We will take stern action against operators who violate these regulations,” the statement read, pointing specifically to unauthorised physical and online betting platforms and illegal syndicates.

The DCI emphasized the importance of ethical practices within the betting industry, urging companies to avoid tactics that promote reckless gambling, especially among Kenya’s youth and financially vulnerable populations.

The agency also called on the Association of Gaming Operators of Kenya (AGOK) to take a leading role in public education campaigns aimed at highlighting the dangers of irresponsible betting.

In line with recent government directives, the DCI reaffirmed its enforcement of the nationwide suspension of all gambling advertisements. The agency further warned social media influencers and content creators against promoting betting through endorsements and sponsored content.

“To the youth and vulnerable groups tempted by the allure of quick wins, we emphasize this: your future holds far more promise than fleeting gambling gains,” the statement read. “Education, entrepreneurship, and hard work remain the most rewarding and sustainable paths forward.”

The DCI also raised alarm over the sharp rise in gambling activities, driven by aggressive advertising and the easy access to mobile money and digital loan platforms, which have made it easier for individuals to fund destructive betting habits.

“Persistent ads are luring financially vulnerable individuals into these schemes,” the agency warned. “Many spend excessive time and money betting, losing focus on more productive pursuits.”

The statement concluded with a national call to action, urging Kenyans to unite in building a safer and more responsible betting environment.

“The well-being of our country—especially its youth—depends on it,” the DCI stressed.
