Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga has protested the withdrawal of his security, accusing the state of intimidation following his participation in a protest march earlier this week.
In letters to Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Maraga demanded the reinstatement of his two bodyguards and driver, citing provisions under the Retirement Benefits Act.
He said one of the officers was sent for training on Wednesday, while the other two were withdrawn the following day.
Maraga, who joined Wednesday’s city centre march in honour of victims of last year’s anti-finance bill protests, said the move appeared retaliatory.
He has been vocal about police brutality and recently called for the resignation and prosecution of top police bosses following the death of Albert Ojwang in custody.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula criticised Maraga’s role in the protest, saying it undermined his former office’s dignity and sent the wrong message to the youth.
Maraga retired in 2021 and has hinted that he may be vying for president in 2027.
