Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs in Kenya Hassan Joho has shared that transformative projects are underway in Kilifi County to improve fisheries management and support marine livelihoods.

He said that through the KEMFSED Project, a modern Model Fish Depot at the Kilifi Central Landing Site is now 85 percent complete.

According to Joho, the facility is set to transform fish handling, processing, and marketing in the region.

“It will include a high capacity three ton ice flake machine, advanced chilled storage, a new jetty, strengthened quality control systems, and closer management by the Beach Management Unit to ensure more efficient and sustainable operations,” he said.

Joho also noted that the new Kilifi Fisheries Office is 90 percent complete. He said the facility, which features state of the art offices, a modern boardroom, and improved workspaces, will serve as a central hub for better coordination and support to local fisher communities.

He added that the State Department for Blue Economy will continue collaborating with development partners to implement similar projects across the coastal region, describing the initiatives as part of efforts to build a resilient and thriving marine economy in Kilifi County.
