President William Ruto has held discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on opportunities to expand collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, as Kenya seeks to strengthen its position as a leading technology hub in Africa.

This discussion took place at the sideline of the G7 Leaders’ Summit where the two leaders decided to jointly explore ways of engagement including turning Nairobi into the location of the first OpenAI Academy in the Eastern Africa region.

“We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading hub for AI talent and innovation.” said President Ruto

President Ruto mentioned this novel idea will help support AI education, building the digital skills repertoire, and supplying teachers and students with the necessary knowledge to effectively work in a digital economy that’s constantly growing.

Innovative technologies should be locked onto and harnessed for not only creating jobs for the youth but also for the quickening of change and for Africa to be the main player in the future of artificial intelligence and technology.

The said partnership is a perfect fit with Kenya’s dream to turn itself into the first choice country in the region for technology, innovation, and digital talents by, among other things, training and up, skilling local talents.

With the help of these major international tech companies, Kenya plans to prepare its people for future challenges by giving them skills that will keep them relevant in the future.

Meanwhile, the country is opening avenues for entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators to use AI as a tool for economic prosperity.
