The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, today officiated the inauguration of the NHIF Pending Medical Claims Verification Committee at Afya House in Nairobi.
The committee, which was established through Kenya Gazette Notice No. 4069 on March 28, 2025, is tasked with scrutinizing and verifying medical claims that have been pending with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) from July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2024.
The committee will also recommend to the Ministry of Health the settlement of verified claims and other associated responsibilities.

In his address, Hon. Duale expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to conduct a thorough and impartial review of the outstanding medical claims, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability.
“This committee is a critical step towards restoring public trust in our health financing system. We must ensure that every shilling spent delivers meaningful health outcomes, in line with the Government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” said Duale.
The Health Cabinet Secretary emphasized that while the government recognizes the financial challenges faced by some healthcare providers, the verification process must be guided by the principles of value for money and ensuring transparency in the use of public resources.

Mr. James Masiro, the committee’s Chairperson, acknowledged the enormity and urgency of the task ahead. He assured the Ministry that the committee would adhere to its timelines and uphold high standards of professionalism in the verification process.
“We understand that the success of this process depends on our ability to work collaboratively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism. We are fully committed to earning and sustaining the trust placed in us,” said Masiro.
Hon. Duale was accompanied by Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai (Medical Services), Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Social Health Authority Acting CEO Mr. Robert Ingasira, SHA Chairperson Mr. Abdi Mohamed, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
The committee’s work is expected to significantly contribute to resolving long-standing issues with pending claims and improve the overall efficiency of the NHIF in managing the country’s health financing system.
