The Consumer Organization of Kenya (COK) has raised concerns over the sale of unlabeled poultry products from neighbouring countries, urging the government to take swift action against retailers offering these products.
A recent spot check revealed that several poultry items, imported from neighbouring nations, were being sold without proper labels, failing to meet Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) regulations.
“Proper labeling and compliance with health standards are essential to protecting public health, especially given the recent rise in foodborne illnesses,” COK stated in a press release.
The organization highlighted the risks posed by unlabelled products, which lack vital information such as product origin, expiry dates, and health safety details.
This information is crucial for consumers to make informed decisions and avoid potential health hazards.
COK is now calling on Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa and the Department of Veterinary Services to take immediate action against retailers found to be selling these unlabeled products.
