The final four teams of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) clash today in the semi-finals, with defending champions Senegal facing two-time winners Morocco, while surprise packages Sudan and Madagascar go head-to-head in the other tie.
The last-four line-up was confirmed after a dramatic quarter-final weekend that saw all three co-hosts—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—crash out despite strong home support across venues in East Africa.
Senegal underlined their title credentials with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Uganda in Kampala.
Despite controlling much of the game and creating numerous chances, Uganda—who reached the CHAN knockout stage for the first time in history—were undone by a clinical finish from the reigning champions.
Senegal now face Morocco, who edged Tanzania 1-0 in Dar es Salaam in a tightly contested quarter-final.
While Senegal and Morocco represent CHAN’s traditional heavyweights, the other semi-final features two of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
Sudan continued their fairy-tale run by eliminating 2022 finalists Algeria in Zanzibar. After a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes, the Falcons of Jediane held their nerve in the penalty shootout.
Their opponents, Madagascar, also advanced on penalties after a gritty performance against Kenya’s Harambee Stars, confirming their growing reputation as giant-killers.
The winners of today’s semi-finals will meet in the final on Saturday, August 30, in what promises to be one of the most memorable editions in CHAN history.
