The Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Chwele-Kabuchai Ward, James Mukhongo Barasa, has passed away after a brave battle with cancer.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula led the nation in mourning the seasoned politician, eulogizing him as a humble, dedicated leader whose life was defined by service, resilience, and deep commitment to his people.
“Mukhongo was not just a leader,” said Wetang’ula. “He was a brother, a son of the soil, and a friend to many. I knew him before the titles, before the acclaim — as a young man full of dreams and humility.”
Barasa’s political journey began in 2002 when he was nominated as a councillor. He was later elected as MCA in 2013 and served with distinction until his death. He was also the chairperson of the Finance Committee in the Bungoma County Assembly and the Ford Kenya Party chairman in Kabuchai Constituency.
Wetang’ula described Barasa as a servant leader who remained grounded, principled, and loyal throughout his political career.
“His voice spoke for the voiceless, his efforts uplifted the vulnerable, and his presence brought hope to many homes,” said Wetang’ula. “His passing is not just a loss to his family and the people of Kabuchai, but to all of us who were touched by his kindness and unrelenting passion for community empowerment.”
The Speaker conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the National Assembly, the Ford Kenya Party, and his own family, praying for comfort for Mukhongo’s loved ones during this difficult time.
“May James’ soul, having fought the good fight and kept the faith, find eternal peace in the presence of God. Farewell, my brother. Farewell, gallant son of Kabuchai,” he said.
