Chelsea delivered a dominant performance to defeat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, capping off a remarkable season with a historic triumph in the first-ever 32-team edition of the tournament.
Watched by U.S. President Donald Trump, the Blues took control early, with Cole Palmer scoring twice in the 22nd and 30th minutes to give Chelsea a commanding lead.
The 21-year-old then turned provider, setting up Joao Pedro for the third goal just before halftime.
PSG, fresh off a UEFA Champions League title and a 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid in the semi-finals, came into the match as favourites.
But in a reversal of fortunes, the French champions found themselves trailing 3-0 by the break—mirroring the margin they had inflicted on Real midway through their own semi-final.
Any hopes of a PSG comeback faded as Chelsea controlled the second half.
The Parisians’ frustrations boiled over late when Joao Neves was sent off in the 86th minute after a VAR review showed him pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair off the ball.
The victory marks a stunning conclusion to Chelsea’s season. Alongside the Club World Cup, they claimed the UEFA Conference League title and secured a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
The club will also pocket approximately $125 million in prize money from the tournament.
For PSG, the financial rewards remain substantial, but the defeat will sting. Despite winning the French league and cup double, and lifting the Champions League trophy, their dream of sweeping all major titles this season fell just short.
Luis Enrique’s side now has a month off before returning to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup—where redemption may be top of mind.
