Chaos broke out at Christ Impact Church in Ruiru on Sunday after an enraged mob stormed the church premises, accusing the church leader, Pastor Peter Barangu of sodomy. The situation escalated rapidly, forcing congregants to flee as protesters vandalized the church, hurled stones, and looted church property.
The unrest was triggered by accusations that surfaced online, alleging that Pastor Barangu had sexually molested several young men. The claims sparked outrage both on social media and among local residents, culminating in the violent protests witnessed at the church.
What started as a demonstration against the pastor’s alleged actions quickly spiraled into a looting spree, with some individuals taking advantage of the chaos to destroy church property and steal valuables. Banners bearing the church’s name were pulled down in a symbolic act of defiance against the embattled preacher.
Police were forced to intervene, lobbing tear gas canisters to disperse both the protesters and congregants caught in the fray. Speaking to the press, Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Maina Kibathi confirmed that officers were in pursuit of Pastor Barangu. However, he noted that no formal complaints had been lodged at the Ruiru Police Station regarding the alleged sexual misconduct.
The incident has sparked widespread debate, with the public demanding justice for the alleged victims. Meanwhile, tensions remain high in Ruiru as authorities work to restore order and establish the full extent of the allegations against the church leader.
This developing story has further fueled discussions on accountability within religious institutions, with many calling for thorough investigations into claims of abuse within places of worship.
