For those who normally use Bomas–Kiserian Road, it is time to change your travel plan. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced that the road would be closed for six weeks to allow thorough works on the road.

In a Friday release, KeNHA said the road will close on Monday, October 20, and will stay shut until December 1, 2025. The section under closure is between Galleria/Brookhouse area and Catholic University of Eastern Africa junction.

The agency continues to say that closing the tunnel will pave the way for the construction of two new box culverts an essential project to improve drainage and prevent future damage to the road.

With the road closed, KeNHA advises motorists to divert their traffic in a bid to decongest the route. Motorists can divert through Langata Road, then link through Langata South Road, Kiboko Road, and Banda Lane, before accessing Magadi Road.

The alternative option is diverting through Mukoma Road, also accessing Magadi Road along the Shell petrol station.

KeNHA acting Director General Luka Kimeli appeals to drivers to exercise patience and cooperate with police marshals and road signs at diversion points. “We are appealing to motorists to plan in advance and observe road signs to minimize delays,” he said.

Six-week closure is only part of broader plans to restore important city center roads across the city. Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) also gave temporary closure of a part of Likoni Road in Nairobi recently.

That closure began on October 15 and is set to run until up to October 31 as part of the Urban Road Improvement Programme.

At the same time, motorists are being directed to utilize alternatives of Outer Ring Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road, and Lusaka Road.

KeNHA and KURA both regret the inconvenience apologetically and implore the public to bear the short-term hardship for the sake of the long-term benefits.
