Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed that he and his technical staff have been working without formal Kenyan work permits for more than a year.
McCarthy stated despite being in the role for a year and a half, the relevant authorities have not provided him and his staff with proper documentation.
“It’s been one and a half years now in Kenya, but we don’t have work permits. We can’t work as illegal immigrants. That’s why I come, do my job, then leave when the camp is finished,” McCarthy said.
The disclosure comes as concerns over the welfare of Harambee Stars players and the preparations for the team’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign have begun.
The South African coach said the immigration challenges made it difficult for him and his technical team to remain in Kenya between assignments, explaining why they do not stay in the country after completing their assignment with the national team.
His appointment in Kenya was hailed as a major coup, bringing international experience and credibility to a team that was eager to make its mark on the continental stage.
He also expressed concern over the outstanding payments regarding the players’ commitment and morale, with some players having gone to national camps without receiving promised payments.
“For four to five camps, not receiving any cent of what was promised, of course, as a human being you will be like, is it worth it? Is it okay for the national team?” McCarthy added.
Despite the challenges, McCarthy overseen notable improvements in the team’s performance, tactical discipline and a motivation.
