Belgut MP Nelson Koech has announced that Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi will be summoned to explain the alleged abduction of Uganda’s opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, in Nairobi.
Besigye was reportedly abducted by unknown individuals on November 16 while in the city to attend the book launch of Kenyan politician Martha Karua.
Koech, who chairs the National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations Committee, stated that the summoning of Mudavadi, who is also acting Interior CS, is part of efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the matter factually rather than emotionally.
“I made an undertaking that we are going to invite the relevant leaders to shed light on what exactly happened. I will invite Musalia Mudavadi to come and explain what exactly happened,” Koech said.
The MP also sought to reassure the public and the international community about Kenya’s commitment to peace and security. “We are a peaceful country, we host people, and we are recognized for doing that. Besigye himself felt comfortable coming into the country,” he added.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the integrity of Kenya’s security apparatus, which has faced criticism following a spate of abductions in recent months. Some cases have ended tragically, with victims of anti-Finance Bill protests found dead in different parts of the country.
In the aftermath of his abduction, Besigye was reportedly taken to a Ugandan military facility, where he faced charges related to security and alleged illegal possession of firearms. He was detained until his release on Wednesday.
The summoning of Mudavadi and other leaders by the committee is expected to shed more light on the incident and reaffirm Kenya’s position as a safe haven for visitors and political actors in the region.
