Kenya’s athletics fraternity is mourning the death of former Chesumei MP and 2000 Boston Marathon champion Elijah Lagat, who passed away just hours after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s demise was made public.

Lagat, a towering figure in Kenya’s long-distance running scene of the 1990s and early 2000s, was celebrated as one of the pioneers who cemented the country’s dominance in global marathon running. His remarkable athletic career saw him capture major titles and represent Kenya on the world stage before transitioning into politics.

The celebrated athlete etched his name in history after winning the 2000 Boston Marathon in 2:09:47. He also clinched victories in the Berlin Marathon in 1997 (2:07:41) and the Prague Marathon in 1998 (2:08:52), alongside podium finishes in Frankfurt (1995) and Torino (1997). Lagat later represented Kenya at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, proudly flying the national flag.

Following his retirement from competitive athletics, Lagat ventured into public service, serving two terms as the Member of Parliament for Chesumei.

In a statement, Athletics Kenya extended its condolences to Lagat’s family, friends, and the entire athletics community, describing him as a man whose grit, endurance, and fighting spirit inspired generations of runners.

“May his legacy continue to inspire, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,” the federation said.
