Agnes Jebet Dominates 5,000m at Diamond League Brussels

World 10 km record holder Agnes Jebet Ngetich delivered a commanding performance to win the women’s 5,000 meters at the 49th Allianz Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meet in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday night.

In peak form ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Ngetich surged to the front at the 3,000m mark and maintained her lead to cross the finish line in 14:24.99.

The victory propelled her to third place in the Diamond League standings with 15 points.

Ethiopians Likina Amebaw and Aleshign Baweke followed in second and third, posting times of 14:31.51 and 14:31.88, respectively.

In the women’s 1500m, Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir secured a third-place finish with a strong time of 3:57.35. She trailed American Nikki Hiltz, who won the race in 3:55.94, and Australia’s Linden Hall, who came second in 3:56.33.

Olympic and world bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot finished fourth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking 8:11.26.

Rising star Phanuel Kosgei impressed in the men’s 1500m, claiming second place in 3:31.41, while fellow Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot placed fifth.

In the javelin, former World Champion Julius Yego threw 80.50m to finish fifth. The event was won by Germany’s Julian Weber with an impressive 89.65m effort.

Meanwhile, Mercy Andongo Oketch claimed victory in the women’s 400m non-Diamond League race, finishing in 51.26 seconds.

As the 2025 Diamond League circuit nears its conclusion, attention now shifts to the final meet in Zurich, scheduled for August 27–28. Top athletes from across the 14 events will battle for Diamond League titles and secure their spots at the World Athletics Championships.
