President William Ruto has sent condolences to families of 23 people killed in a road accident at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Makueni County.

The President also directed relevant authorities to conduct thorough inspections of public service vehicles (PSVs) to ensure compliance with safety standards and prevent further road accidents.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Ruto described the incident as a painful loss for the affected families and the country.

“This is a painful and devastating loss for the families and for the nation. We share in your grief during this difficult time, and we pray for strength and comfort for the families,” he lamented

He urged motorists, particularly PSV drivers, to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to protect passengers and other road users.

The accident occurred at around 7am when a bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International, carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony and travelling towards Mombasa, collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.

Initial reports indicated that 20 people died at the scene, with the death toll later rising to 23.
Sixteen injured passengers were taken to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for treatment.

Ruto expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The directive comes amid renewed concerns over road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection requirements, particularly for public transport operators.
