President William Ruto has pledged increased government support for Kenya’s women’s national football teams after an emotional meeting with Junior Starlets and Harambee Starlets ahead of their international assignments.
The President made the commitments on Tuesday morning after hosting the two teams at State House, Nairobi, as Junior Starlets prepare for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup while Harambee Starlets get ready for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
During the meeting, some of the players opened up about the challenges they face away from the pitch. They spoke about the need for better medical care, improved living conditions and continued government support as they represent the country on the international stage.
Touched by their appeal, Ruto assured the players that the government would stand by them.
“We are going to provide comprehensive medical cover for all of you. If any player requires specialised treatment or surgery, the government will take care of it,” the President said.
He also promised to support players with decent housing, noting that many of them come from humble backgrounds and deserve a better environment as they pursue their football careers.
The Head of State further assured the teams that the government would continue investing in women’s football by providing the financial support needed for training, preparations and participation in major tournaments.
“You have made Kenya proud. Go and fly our flag high. We will continue supporting you because you have shown that with determination, our girls can compete with the best in the world,” Ruto told the players.
Junior Starlets secured their place at the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Cameroon in the final qualification round, earning Kenya a second consecutive appearance at the global tournament.
Harambee Starlets, on the other hand, are preparing to return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they will be seeking to make a strong impression against some of the continent’s top teams.
The President’s pledges came after the players openly shared their personal struggles, turning what was expected to be a routine send-off into a meeting that could shape the future welfare of Kenya’s women’s football teams.
