President William Ruto has assured the Kenyan public that the government will continue to support the creative economy and make it one of the top drivers of the country’s transformation agenda. To that effect, he unveiled new policy interventions and institutional support structures that will empower youth and create more opportunities in the industry.
During his address at the 14th Kalasha TV, Film Market and Awards ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, the President noted that the creative sector is a major source of talent generation, innovation, and the engine of inclusive economic growth.
The President disclosed that the government has set up a State Department for the Creative Economy and is implementing other measures to enhance the sector. This includes establishing a Creative Economy Office at State House to manage the sector’s development and coordination.
“To deepen this commitment, I have created a Creative Economy Office at State House. Soon, we will appoint key officials, including the Director of Gaming, Secretary for Film Services, and Head of Music and Fashion.” he said
The head of state intimated that soon after announcing some of the industry-supporting appointments like a Director of Gaming, a Secretary for Film Services, and a Head of Music and Fashion. These roles are envisaged to facilitate the regulation and growth of creative sub-sectors.
In a gesture to increase the income of creatives, the President revealed the intention to allocate 30 percent of government advertising to local creative platforms.
He further urged Parliament to fast-track the enactment of the Creative Economy Bill 2026 and to step up copyright enforcement so that artists receive a reasonable share and are protected from exploitation.
Besides Kenyan talents, the event featured familiar faces from the world of film including actors, directors, and producers. It provided a wonderful stage to bring to light the creativity and artistry of the younger generation shifting the cultural landscape of Kenya.
After wishing all the winners well in their future endeavours, Ruto revealed that State House intends to host the awards ceremony next year, thus signaling that the state will play an even more prominent role in supporting and showcasing the industry.
