Police have arrested a 45-year-old woman as investigations continue into the sudden death of veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, a director at The Nairobi Hospital.
Dr Obwaka, 83, was reportedly the last person seen with the woman before he collapsed on Friday evening in Kitengela. Detectives now consider her a key person of interest as they work to piece together the doctor’s final hours.
According to police, the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday morning and is being held as officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) step up their inquiry.
The report made at Kilimani Police Station, the deceased was immediately transported to The Nairobi Hospital via ambulance following collapse when he was out on personal affairs in Kitengela. The deceased was accompanied by the woman at the time of his collapse.
According to one section of the police report, the deceased’s companion seems to be a business associate who has been put under arrest and her role in the matter is being thoroughly investigated.
It was reported by officials at the hospital that when Dr. Obwaka was brought to their premises, he was already dead upon arrival although they are still investigating the cause of death in relation to previous medical problems.
He was identified by police officers who then transferred the corpse to Lee Funeral Home for a post mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
The woman has been held in custody pending further investigation and she is currently inquiring into her role.
The unfortunate death of Dr. Obwaka shocked the whole nation particularly the Kenyan medical fraternity. He had been a devoted employee in the field of women’s health and director of The Nairobi Hospital for several years.
His death comes in the wake of a period where he found himself in the limelight after being arrested together with other directors at the same institution due to disagreements over internal issues a move that drew condemnation from the KMPDU.
