Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government is on track to establish the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit by May 1, in line with a directive issued by President William Ruto.

Murkomen said the formation of the unit is part of a cooperation agreement between the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government, aimed at strengthening security within the capital.

Speaking after convening a meeting of the technical committee overseeing the process, the CS noted that the team is already reviewing progress to ensure timely operationalization of the new unit.

“As per the directive of H.E the President, and the cooperation agreement between the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government, we are committed to establishing the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit by the 1st of May,” Cs said in a statement.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is expected to play a critical role in managing security within the city, particularly given its high population and growing economic importance.

Murkomen emphasized that the initiative is designed to make Nairobi safer for residents, visitors, and investors, boosting confidence in the country’s commercial hub.

The meeting was attended by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Internal Security Principal Administrative Secretary Jacob Narengo, Secretary Administration Thomas Saka, and National Police Service Director of Reforms John Kamau, alongside other senior government officials.
