In a dramatic scene captured by a number of cameras, a group of men reportedly from a group of goons raided former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera’s hotel in Kisumu in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. The group is seen approaching the hotel around 5:15 am, after which they stormed into the hotel.
The footage shows the group entering the compound after forcing their way past the security at the entrance of the hotel. The group then spread out to different areas of the hotel and started destroying property, some of them armed with machetes.
The next scene shows a number of them in the bar area of the hotel, where furniture and what looked like kitchenware was damaged. The group wore masks and helmets, which made it difficult to identify them. After causing destruction, a number of them left the hotel with some of the items.
Nyakera said he fired two shots into the air to scare the group away. He said the attackers abused the hotel staff and tied up the female security guard before continuing with the destruction of property in the hotel. Nyakera also said the attack on the hotel was politically motivated and cited his competitors as the ones behind the attack, considering he was at the hotel during the attack.
In a post on social media, Nyakera wrote about what transpired, stating that, “At about 5 a.m. today, more than 100 goons attacked my hotel in Kisumu, destroying property and injuring staff, including tying up the security lady.”
Nyakera said he called the area police commander to assist him, but the response came slowly. He said he then issued a threat to the attackers, saying he would defend himself if he saw anyone trying to access the hotel.
He claims that some of his hotel records were destroyed in the process. He also claims that a similar incident occurred a few weeks prior to this incident when a group raided his hotel and stole goods.
