The government has stepped up efforts to secure a stable water supply for Nairobi and its surrounding areas, as Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eric Mugaa toured key water infrastructure serving the capital.
During the visit, the CS inspected the Thika/Ndakaini Dam and the Chania–Ng’ethu Water Supply System, facilities that play a central role in supplying raw water for treatment and distribution to Nairobi.
He also assessed the tunnels and intake systems that channel water from the Chania and Mataara rivers to the Ng’ethu Water Treatment Plant, one of the main sources of water for the city.
“The Government of Kenya is implementing strategic infrastructure investments to strengthen water security and improve bulk water supply to Nairobi and the Nairobi Metropolitan area. These interventions are designed to enhance system efficiency, increase production capacity, and ensure reliable access to clean and safe water for millions of residents in and around the city of Nairobi,” he said on his post on social media.
CS Mugaa said the government is investing in major upgrades to strengthen water security, improve efficiency, and expand capacity to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population.
He noted that reliable water supply is critical to public health, business, and daily life for millions of residents.
The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation says the ongoing projects are designed to reduce shortages, improve service delivery, and guarantee long-term water security for Nairobi and the wider metropolitan region.
