A heartbroken husband has revealed in court the final days of his wife, Lucy Wambui, who passed away after suffering severe complications during a cosmetic surgery procedure in Nairobi.
During the court hearing, the man testified that the post-mortem analysis revealed that Wambui died due to complications that resulted from liposuction from a failed Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure that she had undergone.
According to his testimony, Wambui went for liposuction and BBL surgery at Body by Design Clinic on October 16, 2024. When he went to check on her after undergoing the procedure, he saw her suffering and complaining about abdominal pain.
“I noticed there was a bad smell emanating from her clothes,” he told the court, explaining the clothes were soon realised to be smothered in blood and bodily fluids.
He stated that she developed complications the next day, forcing him to look for medical assistance from the clinic. The doctor is alleged to have brushed off his complaints by saying they were expected after the surgery.
“‘They told me it was nothing serious and that such symptoms were to be expected after surgery,’ he testified,” he said.
Despite this, Wambui was eventually discharged from the health facility. Upon return home, her health deteriorated. According to her husband: “I thought of rushing her back to the health center. Upon arrival, I found it was closed.
With very limited options, he took her to Nairobi Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition.
Later, Wambui died on 23rd October 2024, seven days after the surgery. In one of her last emotional moments, her husband told the court that she requested him to take care of their 13-year-old son.
The Ministry of Health and Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council directed the closure of the facility following her death. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions later opened a case file against this medical facility and management based on investigations undertaken after her death.
“The husband insists that his wife had been in good health before undergoing the medical procedure. He demands that the medical center be closed down indefinitely.”
“I want justice for my wife,” he told the court. The hearing is set to continue on Thursday, January 22, where more witnesses, in addition to the doctor and the nurse who treated Wambui, will be testifying.
