The victorious Kenya national athletics team that put up an outstanding show at the just concluded World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, will be coming back home this afternoon.
Out of 58 members, 48 athletes from the squad will fly back to their home countries. Double world champion Beatrice Chebet, whose brilliant performance was instrumental in handpicking Kenya as one of the top athletics countries in the world, will be leading the way back home.
Kenya managed to come second in the entire competition behind the United States. The team scored a total of 11 medals – 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze – at the nine-day championships.
The gold medal winners were Lilian Odira, Beatrice Chebet, Faith Kipyegon, Peres Jepchirchir, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Faith Cherotich. They were irresistible in their respective events.
Using the opportunity to get the most medals out of the World Athletics Championships, Faith Kipyegon was also awarded with a silver medal. Dorcus Ewoi also earned silver. On the other hand, Reynold Cheruiyot and Edmund Serem received bronze medals to complement Kenya’s tally.
This was a remarkable performance by the team, reaffirming Kenya’s dominance and tradition in middle and long-distance running. Supporters were screaming for joy while waiting for their heroes to come back.
