Nyandarua County is moving forward by leaps to implement Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which is evidenced by the vaccination rate being at 96 per cent and the proportion of safe delivery accounts at 98 per cent.
Health CS Aden Duale, during a meeting with county leadership, approved the idea of raising the number of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) from 1,237 to about 1,500. The plan aims at empowering care at the household level while also extending basic health services to the people living in the rural areas.
The CS also described the SHA as a very important tool in providing cheaper and affordable health care and urged residents of Nyandarua to register with it. He also assured the country that the government was committed to the universal coverage of NHA under the SHA.
Together with Governor Kiarie Badilisha, CS Duale saw the beautiful new wing of JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital, which will bring the intensive care unit, the high dependency unit, the neonatology, and the postnatal units under one roof. This hospital will be a teaching and referral hospital upgraded to Level 5.
Through the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), the hospital has been given a CT scan unit that will be installed next week. Healthcare workers are undergoing capacity-building training, and the machines for ultrasound and dialysis are expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
Duale remarked that health, aside from being the basis of human development, was also a major contributor to economic growth.
