The launch of the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service has eased travel costs for thousands of residents and highlighted the leadership that fast-tracked the landmark project.

At the centre of the effort is Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, who, working closely with the Kenya Railways Board, steered the project from planning to completion. The service was officially commissioned by President William Ruto on Wednesday.

Cheaper Fares, Greater Access
The new service connects Miritini, Changamwe, Shimanzi and the Mombasa CBD at a fare of just Ksh 50—far lower than the Ksh 400 charged by matatus and up to Ksh 800 for taxis.

President Ruto hailed the project as a “milestone in making transport affordable, reliable and inclusive for all Kenyans.”

While the President led the unveiling, industry observers point to Mainga’s role in pushing the project forward. He is credited with mobilising resources, navigating bureaucratic challenges, and ensuring the service was ready on time.

“The leadership at Kenya Railways has shown that public institutions can deliver world-class projects when given the right direction,” said one Mombasa resident at the launch.

Economic and Social Gains
Kenya Railways has also announced plans to build a Junior Secondary School on public land near the line, a move expected to create jobs and expand education access. The commuter service is projected to ease road congestion, improve business linkages, and open new opportunities for traders and workers.

Kenya Railways’ Growing Profile
The successful rollout strengthens Kenya Railways’ position as a rising regional player in both passenger and cargo transport.

For Mombasa commuters, the Ksh 50 fare represents more than savings—it is proof that effective leadership can deliver tangible improvements to daily life.
