Commuters in Mombasa are set to enjoy massive relief in transport costs after President William Ruto commissioned the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, slashing fares to just Ksh 50.
The announcement, made during the official launch on Tuesday, marks a major milestone for Kenya Railways, which continues to expand affordable, reliable, and efficient transport for Kenyans.
Until now, passengers have been paying up to Ksh 400 for matatus and as much as Ksh 800 for taxis between Mombasa’s outskirts and the central business district. The new commuter rail service offers a cheaper, safer, and faster alternative for thousands of daily travellers.
The commuter train will make regular stops at:Miritini Changamwe West,Changamwe East,Shimanzi and Mombasa CBD.
This network is expected to significantly decongest Mombasa roads while easing the cost of living for families and businesses.
While unveiling the new service, President William Ruto said the move was in line with his administration’s agenda to ease the cost of living and ensure every Kenyan enjoys modern transport at an affordable rate.
“This Ksh 50 fare is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to putting money back in the pockets of ordinary Kenyans. Transport should never be a burden,” the President said.
Kenya Railways has been praised for continuing to deliver on its mandate of connecting Kenyans affordably and efficiently. The agency says the new service is part of its long-term plan to link commuter towns with urban centres, ensuring that modern railway transport becomes the backbone of Kenya’s mobility.
For thousands of Mombasa commuters, the new train is not just a ride — it’s a lifeline.
