The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued a clarification for continuing university and college students awaiting their subsequent loan disbursements.

In a statement released on August 8, the board explained that the scholarship portion of the loan package has not been scrapped but will now be processed separately from upkeep funds.

“HELB has changed the structure of allocations. The scholarship has not been removed; it has simply been separated from your upkeep and will be processed differently,” the statement read.

Currently, only upkeep amounts are visible in student accounts. The upkeep is determined using a new band structure and covers the entire academic year, paid in two equal instalments, one per semester.

Band 1: Ksh60,000 per year (Ksh30,000 per semester)
Band 2: Ksh55,000 per year (Ksh27,500 per semester)
Band 3: Ksh50,000 per year (Ksh25,000 per semester)
Band 4: Ksh45,000 per year (Ksh22,500 per semester)
Band 5: Ksh40,000 per year (Ksh20,000 per semester)
HELB assured that the scholarship amount will be through after, and asked students whose portals are yet to display any amount to be patient, as it is being processed in phases.

Students who applied through the HELB App or by dialling *642# were told their applications remain valid and will be allocated funds in due course.

“Let’s remain patient as allocations are being updated in phases. Your turn is coming,” the board said, adding that more updates will be issued in the coming days
