Okutoyi and Shah Settle for Silver in Mixed Doubles Tennis Final in Germany

Kenya’s tennis duo of Angela Okutoyi and Kael Shah bagged silver at the ongoing World University Games in Germany.

The two finished second in the mixed doubles on Friday.

They lost 2-0 (6-3, 6-3) to Japan’s Natsuki Yashimoto and Jay Dylan Friend in the final held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Okutoyi was seeking her third major title after making history by becoming the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon event in 2022.

She also won the African Games title in Accra, Ghana in 2024 also becoming first Kenyan to clinch the crown.

The FISU World University Games unite top student-athletes from across the globe as they compete for glory in a wide range of disciplines, including swimming, basketball, athletics, and tennis, among others.

So far, Kenya has secured one gold and one silver medal at the event. Brian Musau claimed victory in the men’s 10,000m race, while Sarah Wanjiku earned silver after finishing second in the 25-lap event.
