In a heart-breaking message that has touched many Kenyans on social media, comedian and activist Eric Omondi narrated the story of Millicent Maina, a mother in a critical condition who is being looked after by her 11-year-old son. “This is the saddest thing I’ve seen this year,” Eric wrote, holding back visible emotion. “This mother is in utter pain and she is being taken care of by her 11-year-old son. This boy should not be changing his mother’s diapers.”

Eric bemoaned the medical crisis, the social and systemic failure that has driven the child into a situation no child ever needs to suffer. “It’s wrong mentally, culturally, and psychologically,” he exclaimed, condemning a society that has seemingly lost its bearings. He went on to read out Millicent’s full name and phone number and called on Kenyans to contribute whatever they could towards her treatment and maintenance.

This is not the first time Eric Omondi has used his platform to campaign. In the last few months, he’s spoken out on issues ranging from youth unemployment to inaccessible healthcare, often taking both the government and society at large to task.Millicent Maina’s tale is a reminder of the daily struggles that are hidden behind closed doors. Kenyans have taken to social media to support the young boy and his mother.
