President William Ruto has beseeched parents to take a central role in the upbringing of their children.

The head of state insisted that parenting is a God-given role, asking guardians not to abdicate it or delegate it to the government and religious institutions.

Speaking at AIC Bomani in Machakos during the installation of Bishop Benjamin Kalanzo, President Ruto said he takes time from his tight schedule to parent his kids and so should everyone.

“Our children are a gift from God to our families and the nation. We must mentor them; parenting is a God-given responsibility. Don’t abdicate it to the church or the government," said Ruto.

With several young people caught on the wrong side of the law by police officers, the president insisted that police’s role is to deal with criminals, not parent kids.

"The police are trained to deal with criminals, not parenting, so if you surrender your children to the police, what do you expect? I take time to parent my children, so must everybody," President Ruto added.
