Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, has arrived in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to participate in the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting scheduled for July 10 – 13, 2025.
H.E. Dr. Workneh will leads the IGAD team attending this high level forum aimed at addressing specific issues pertaining to the region’s long standing priorities on multilateralism, peace and security, trade, gender issues, youth and sustainable development.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting is one of the major meeting that integrate activities of the AU with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the Member States as part of the AU’s institutional reform Agenda as well as Agenda 2063.
As a Chair of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform, Dr. Workneh will also convene a dedicated meeting of the RECs to address particular common problems and possibilities for cooperation.
This session will also brief the members on the results achieved during IGAD’s chair of the Platform on promoting member inter-REC cooperation, better institutional coordination and stronger voice for Africa in global governance.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Workneh assured that IGAD remains committed to the continental integration as well di regional transformation:
“This gathering represents Africa’s united effort to shape its future through coordinated action, regional solidarity, and inclusive development. IGAD remains fully committed to fostering collaboration across RECs and aligning with the AU’s vision for a prosperous, integrated, and peaceful Africa.”
IGAD’s participation highlights the organisation’s continued leadership in regional integration efforts, as well as its role in supporting African institutions to deliver results that improve the lives of citizens across the continent.
