The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) is calling for the immediate deportation of a Chinese supervisor captured on video assaulting a Kenyan employee at the TCM Mabati Factory in Eldoret.

In a letter addressed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli said the footage—showing the manager slapping and pushing a Kenyan worker—highlights a growing trend of abuse in certain foreign-operated factories.

“Atwoli emphasized that the Government must ensure the dignity and fair treatment of Kenyan workers employed in foreign-owned enterprises within the country.

He further urged authorities to take action against other “rogue” Chinese investors, including individuals in some Export Processing Zones (EPZs) accused of coercing Kenyan staff to sing Chinese songs.

COTU added that the Eldoret incident reflects a similar complaint lodged last week involving a Chinese investor at an EPZ facility who allegedly compelled workers to sing in Chinese “before, during, and after their shifts” while also verbally harassing union representatives.
