The Pending Bills Verification Committee has made significant progress in reviewing outstanding claims submitted to the National Treasury, with a total of 65,625 claims valued at over KSh 571.6 billion received so far.

According to Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, 57% of the bills, equivalent to KSh 522 billion, have been thoroughly analyzed. Following the verification process, the Committee has recommended the settlement of KSh 229 billion in legitimate claims.

“The verification process is critical in restoring trust and ensuring public resources are used accountably. We are working to ensure that only valid and eligible bills are paid,” said CS Mbadi while delivering the 2025/2026 Budget Statement.

The Treasury noted that the final decision on payment awaits Cabinet approval, after which disbursement will commence to ease financial strain on contractors and service providers across government entities.

In a related announcement, CS Mbadi revealed that the National Treasury is in consultations with the Ministry of Education to develop a policy on cost-sharing mechanisms for national examination fees.

“We are engaging with the Ministry of Education to find the most effective way to share costs associated with examination fees, while ensuring no student is left behind due to financial barriers,” he stated.

This move aims to create a balanced and sustainable funding framework that supports learners, especially from vulnerable backgrounds, while maintaining the integrity and quality of national examinations.
