With Nairobi City preparing to kick-off the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the traffic police have outlined a new plan in anticipation of the anticipated influx of supporters to the central stadiums.
The tournament kicks off this weekend and is set to draw thousands of supporters to Nyayo Stadium and Kasarani. To avoid gridlock on match days, police say several major roads will be partially closed.
They include:
- Erodrome Road- from Madaraka roundabout up to Bunyala roundabout
- Langata Road – from Madaraka roundabout to Lusaka roundabout (one side)
- Mombasa Road – from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout (one side)
Motorists coming from Mombasa Road into town have been advised to use alternative routes like Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors, or join the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni.
Those driving from Lang’ata Road are being urged to consider Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through the Mbagathi Roundabout.
Fans going to Kasarani can use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road or use Ngomongo Road to access the stadium. From Thika Road, police are recommending diversions via Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.
The changes come ahead of Kenya’s first match of the tournament against the Democratic Republic of Congo at Kasarani, which kicks off Sunday at 3PM. Another big game, Morocco vs Angola, will follow at Nyayo at 6PM.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has promised fans an easier time getting to and from stadiums, saying all efforts are being made to ensure movement isn’t a headache.
"We want to ensure the experience is smooth for all," he stated.
Patrols with direction signs will be installed at the major points to direct traffic flow and also prevent congestion, while tournament officials and emergency responders will get priority on game day.
Authorities are urging fans to leave early to avoid last-minute delays. They say the new plan isn’t just about clearing traffic; it’s also about making the tournament enjoyable and safe for all involved.
