Purity Chepkirui narrowly triumphed in a thrilling race to win the women’s 2km loop at the Absa Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour, held at Lobo Village in Eldoret today.
The 2021 World U-20 1500m champion clocked 06:46 to take the top spot, just ahead of African 800m silver medalist Lillian Odira, who finished second with a time of 06:47. Daisilah Bor secured third place with a time of 06:48.
After the race, Odira shared her focus on the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. “It was a great and exciting race. I’m happy with second place and hope to make the team for the World Indoor Championships,” said the Paris Olympian.
Her second-place finish came a week after she won the women’s 800m at the World Indoor Tour in Lyon with a time of 2:01:04.
Chepkirui, fresh off her victory at the National Cross-Country Championships at Eldoret Sports Club, clocked 7:01.06 to win the women’s 2km loop.
