A terrible and sad event has happened in Homa Bay Town after the death of a woman who was shot outside the Homa Bay Police Station last night.
The victim, identified as Yvonne Lucy, was on her way home from her business when, according to reports, she was hit by a stray bullet.
This happened after a police officer firing warning shots in the air to disperse a crowd that had gathered for a vigil in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Homa Bay Sub-County Police Commander Jashon Odhiambo Pollo informed that the incident took place when the group of mourners who had been peacefully marching since Wednesday came to the police station and some of them tried to enter the compound. To stop the crowd, officers on duty fired in the air.
Unfortunately, a bullet hit Yvonne, who was innocent of the gathering, and caused her death. The unfortunate death of Yvonne has caused a lot of anger to the people who live in this area and they are demanding that the police be held responsible and that the officers who did it be brought to justice.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) affirmed in a statement that it has already taken steps to conduct a joint investigation along with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to determine the events that led to the shooting.
IPOA promised the public that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice without any exceptions. The event painfully interrupts the nationwide mourning period as Kenyans continue to pay their last respects to Raila Odinga, the leader who will forever be remembered for his fight for democracy, justice, and equality.
