Wolves have fired manager Gary O’Neil following their narrow 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday.

The defeat marked their fourth consecutive league loss, adding to previous setbacks: a 4-2 defeat to Bournemouth, a heavy 4-0 loss to Everton, and a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

Despite remaining 19th in the Premier League table, Wolves are four points ahead of 20th-placed Southampton, though the South Coast side has a game in hand.

O’Neil, who had signed a four-year contract extension in August after guiding the team to a 14th-place finish with 46 points in the 2023-24 season, has faced mounting pressure due to his team’s defensive struggles.

They have conceded a league-worst 40 goals in 16 games this season.

“Were very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication, and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future,” said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi in a club statement.

O’Neil, a former West Ham defender, becomes the third Premier League manager to lose his job this season, following the sackings of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and Steve Cooper at Leicester City.
