Value-Added Tea Exports

By John Kariuki

Kenya is shifting its tea export strategy under the leadership of Wilson Muthaura, CEO of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), who is championing value addition through packaging at source and the establishment of distribution centers in Cairo.

Speaking during bilateral trade talks in Nairobi, Muthaura emphasized that this approach is crucial to safeguarding Kenya’s dominant position in Egypt, which remains the country’s largest tea market.

He noted that with tea exports to Egypt having dropped by 10 percent and foreign exchange challenges disrupting trade, direct government agreements are essential to guarantee consistent supply and fair returns for farmers.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and Egyptian Ambassador Wael Nasreldin Attiya joined Muthaura in affirming the sector’s commitment to farmer-driven growth.

The talks also highlighted broader opportunities for agricultural collaboration between the two nations.

Egypt expressed strong interest in grain farming and joint beef ventures in Kenya. A key priority was reducing the cost of Kenyan beef, which currently stands at nearly double the price of Latin American imports. Proposals included establishing joint feedlots and meat processing facilities to enhance competitiveness.

In addition, Egyptian investors were encouraged to partner in agro-industrial projects and support innovation in Kenya’s semi-arid regions. Education exchanges and youth training programs also featured prominently in the discussions, signaling a long-term vision of shared growth.

These engagements build on the 12 bilateral pacts signed last year as Kenya and Egypt deepen trade relations. A potential state visit by Egypt’s President in 2025 is expected to further solidify these ties.

With Wilson Muthaura at the forefront, Kenya’s tea industry is poised to secure not only its position in Egypt but also new avenues of growth for farmers and the broader agricultural sector.
