President William Ruto has mourned former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, who died on Thursday, February 20.
Ruto mourned Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity, adding that his death is a great loss to Kenya.
"I have received the news of the passing of former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country," said Ruto.
Chebukati died while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
The soft-spoken lawyer has been seriously sick with constant visits in and out of the hospital. His health deteriorated on Sunday, February 16, when he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
Before joining IEBC, Chebukati was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with extensive experience in legal practice, specialising in corporate and commercial law.
He was appointed to chair the electoral commission in 2017 and served a full term of six years, retiring in 2023.
Chebukati presided over the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
